This week marked World Asthma Day, with a clear and urgent message: “Access to anti-inflammatory inhalers for everyone with asthma.

The Global Asthma Report 2026 by Global Asthma Report (GAN) shows just how far we still have to go. Across many countries, patients face the same barriers, too few trained health workers, limited diagnostic capacity, and poor access to affordable, essential inhaled medicines. Public awareness and patient education also remain insufficient.

Air pollution continues to drive new cases and worsen outcomes for people living with asthma, reinforcing the need for coordinated action across health and environmental policy.

The solutions are known: strengthen primary health care, invest in surveillance and data systems, and support research networks that enable evidence-based action.

Now we must ensure this evidence reaches decision-makers and drives investment.

We’re calling on governments, funders, and health leaders to act now: expand access to essential asthma medicines, prioritise clean air policies, and invest in health systems that deliver for patients.
