The 2026 Lancet Countdown report on Health and Climate Change highlights the urgent need for stronger climate action to protect global health. Its findings are particularly relevant to the Forum of International Respiratory Societies (FIRS), given the direct links between climate change, air pollution and respiratory disease.
Rising temperatures, wildfires, extreme weather and changing allergen exposure can worsen respiratory health, particularly for people living with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other lung conditions. Air pollution and climate change also share common drivers, meaning that action to reduce emissions can deliver important co-benefits for lung health.
For FIRS, the key message is clear: protecting the climate is essential to protecting lung health. Respiratory professionals and organisations have a vital role in advocating for cleaner air, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and ensuring health systems are prepared for climate-related risks.
The report calls for health to be placed at the centre of climate policy and for urgent action to address the growing health impacts of climate change.
