We’re excited to announce the launch of the FIRS Lung Health Taskforce, in partnership with the Global Lung Function Initiative. The Lung Health Taskforce is helping to redefine how lung health is assessed and diagnosed. Recognizing that lung function is influenced by a complex interplay of biological and social determinants across the lifespan, the Taskforce is addressing critical gaps in current lung health practices.
By developing a Lung Health Spirometry Toolkit, the Taskforce aims to enhance the global application of spirometry, the most widely used lung function test, in both research and clinical care. This toolkit will provide standardized, globally applicable resources, particularly benefiting regions where the burden of lung disease is greatest.
Additionally, the Taskforce is exploring the creation of a Lung Health Index to better predict and manage lung health outcomes. The ultimate goal of the lung health index is to incorporate diverse determinants of health to overcome systemic biases, enabling more precise and equitable lung health assessments.
The Taskforce will work towards achieving consensus through surveys and stakeholder engagement prior to a summit to be held in July 2025.
