Clean Air Facts
Air pollution
- Air pollution is a leading cause of respiratory diseases, responsible for 7 million deaths annually from COPD, lung cancer and respiratory infections.
- Toxic air affects us all, from unborn babies to older people. Air pollution exposure can reduce life expectancy, damage our lungs, increase asthma and lead to chronic respiratory diseases.
- 99% of the global population breathes air that exceeds WHO guideline limits.
- Low- and middle-income countries suffer from the highest exposures to air pollution.
- 50% of the world’s population are exposed to indoor air pollution from open fires and wood-burning stoves causing up to 1.5 million premature deaths each year.
Tobacco use
- Tobacco use is a major cause of preventable death and disease, causing 8 million deaths annuall
- Eliminating tobacco use and exposure to second-hand smoke is essential for improving global health.
- Second-hand smoke is dangerous, causing 1.2 million deaths per year worldwide.
Climate change
- Climate change exacerbates respiratory health issues through increased air pollution, extreme weather and the spread of disease.
- Policies that reduce fossil fuel emissions are a win-win for climate and health.
- Temperature and rainfall changes enhance the spread of vector-borne diseases. If we don’t act, deaths from such diseases, currently over 700 000 annually, will rise.
