💤 Today is World Sleep Day, a global reminder that healthy sleep is essential for our overall health and wellbeing. 💤
For many people, sleep is not always restful. can significantly affect quality of life. One of the most common of these conditions is obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS).
What is obstructive sleep apnoea?
Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the airway in the throat briefly collapses or becomes blocked during sleep. These interruptions in breathing can happen dozens or even hundreds of times each night, often without the person being aware of them. Each pause can reduce oxygen levels and disrupt the normal sleep cycle.
People living with OSAS may experience symptoms during the night—such as loud snoring or breathing pauses—as well as daytime symptoms like excessive tiredness, difficulty concentrating, and morning headaches.
Why awareness matters
Sleep disorders often go undiagnosed, even though they can have a significant impact on daily life and long-term health. Raising awareness helps people recognise the signs and seek advice and support.
The European Lung Foundation, a member of the Forum of International Respiratory Societies, has developed a patient-friendly information hub on sleep-disordered breathing. The resource helps people better understand:
🛌 Symptoms of OSAS, including how they may differ between night-time and daytime
🛌 Possible causes and ways to reduce risk
🛌 Advice for managing sleep-disordered breathing
Accessible, reliable information empowers patients and families to recognise symptoms early and take steps toward better sleep and better health.
